I’ve spent time debating whether or not to continue to maintain the blog. I set it up for the purpose of sharing our adventures while doing the ‘van-dwelling’ thing, and there doesn’t seem to be a huge reason to continue now that the trip is over. However, it serves as a great forum to share our life developments, and we have had a few lately.
After all the time we put into our van – as well as the great adventures we got out of it – we spent months justifying keeping him. “It’ll make a great home for weekend trips to climbing areas”, we told ourselves time and again. However, we chose Chattanooga because of its proximity to so many climbing areas. As a result, we rarely travel more than an hour to climb anywhere. At that distance, it doesn’t make sense to stay overnight, and Ludwig has been sitting at the bottom of our driveway, unused.
With heavy hearts, we decided that the sensible thing to do is to sell our dear Ludwig Van. If you or anyone you know is potentially interested, let me know.
Since John and I seem to strive for extremes, we naturally decided to go from the mobile, minimalist lifestyle to the exact opposite one. As of one week ago, we officially became landowners. Our new project/adventure is to build a house ourselves, with some help from friends and family (and professionals when necessary).
It’s going to be a massive undertaking, especially since the property is on a steep, overgrown hill. Our biggest challenges early on will be designing around the slope, excavating the massive boulders in our building spot, trying to keep as many trees as possible, and getting a driveway up to our garage. I may re-purpose this blog into a ‘home-building’ one, so stay tuned for occasional updates. Or feel feel to unsubscribe… even I can admit that it sounds infinitely less interesting than the van-life travel blog it used to be.
One thing for sure, we certainly can’t claim to be ‘wayward’ anymore.
Congrats on starting this new project. Looking forward to seeing all your progress.
Follow up….Is that one of the boulders you have to move in the picture at the top.
Thankfully, no. We are building around that one on purpose. However, we’ve uncovered a few hidden ones that are nearly as big, and it leads us to believe that we’ll come across more.
The front right corner of the elevation map shows a boxy projection. That’s the approximate size and location of the boulder I’m sitting on in the cover photo.
Thanks for the update and pictures. It will be interesting to watch your house build project!! Have a great Thanksgiving.
Congratulations,Kids!!! I look forward to reading and hearing all about this newest adventure.
I really liked the traveling blog. It was very well written, with adventure stories and outstanding photos. It’s great that the entertainment continues!
