Stroke of Insight

This past weekend there happened to be a get together for Honda Insight owners in Maryland. Considering John’s obsession with his Insight – he drove 2,200 miles to bring his car to InsightFest last summer, he can’t go more than a few hours without talking about his car, and he has designed 3-D printable parts to replace faulty Insight parts – it’s no surprise that he made sure we’d be passing through Maryland during the meet-up.

Ludwig next to more Insights than we have seen over the course of the entire trip (we've passed one in 15,000 miles).

The first day, I opted out and occupied myself elsewhere; however, I am certain it consisted of some major geeking out. On day two, I joined the group at the Steven F Udzar-Hazy air and space museum that contained an SR-71, Enola Gay, the space shuttle Discovery, and many, many other planes.

It has now been nearly six months since we started traveling, and we both agree that we are in no hurry to go back to work; we are simply having too much fun and there are so many places left to visit. However, an interesting opportunity recently presented itself to John.

A few months ago, John came across a job opportunity at FormLabs – a company dedicated to making consumer 3-D printers – and he applied for it on a whim. While passing through the area, he decided to stop by their office in Boston. A three-hour conversation with the CEO left John realizing that it was the perfect job for him and left them realizing they needed him.

However, Boston is a deal breaker for us. Even in October, we found it far too cold for our liking. John turned down the opportunity, but he made such an impression that they couldn’t let him go, so he has now been offered a chance to work as a consultant. We can continue to travel, we don’t have to move to Boston, and he gets his dream job… everybody wins.

I have to admit that Autumn in the northeast is gorgeous... however, it's just too cold!

At this point, we are currently spending a few days in Delaware simply because neither of us had been here and it was only a few hours away. Despite a cold front that has provided us with our coldest night to date (the temperature inside the van got down to 45 degrees last night), we continue to enjoy the nomadic lifestyle.

Congratulations to John! That job sounds awesome. 🙂 Enjoy Delaware – I was born there and lived in Selbyville until I was 2. Don’t blink or you may pass it 🙂 We went to Bethany Beach a lot growing up!

  2. Congrats on the FormLabs position.
