Maine Attraction

I’m not even going to pretend that anyone is reading this for a climbing review, although the two climbing areas we visited in Maine – Shagg Crag and Acadia – were great. My guess is now that we have announced our engagement, everyone wants to hear the proposal story. So I will try to muster the little bit of girliness that exists somewhere within me and spend this blog entry gushing about it.

We were climbing in Acadia National Park, right on the Atlantic Ocean. We were relaxing at the top of the cliffs when he turned to me and asked. It took me a moment to figure out what he was asking, but there was never a doubt in my mind that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. Simply put, I said yes.

John did a great job picking a beautiful spot for a proposal.

I imagine that people fall into one of two categories: utterly unsurprised considering that John and I have been together for over four years, or slightly surprised considering that we had expressed very little interest in marriage. I, for one, fell into the surprised category. Although neither of us were opposed to getting married at some point, we both agreed that it wasn’t a priority.

In order to hopefully reduce the number of times I will have to explain this, I specifically asked him not to get me a ring. I just can’t justify spending a bunch of money on something that doesn’t have any practical function. Instead, he is going to take me on a trip to Thailand – a place I have been dying to visit – which is a much better use of the money.

In terms of weddings plans, the only thing we have decided so far is that we want to wait until the trip is done. The prospect of planning a wedding is completely overwhelming, so I am in no hurry to start that process.
