Rain Dance

It’s raining in the Southeast! We’ve thrice attempted to outsmart the rain by seeking climbing destinations with favorable weather (thanks climbingweather.com), but each time the forecast changed en route and we were greeted with more gloomy weather.

If I were to actually add all our driving to our map, it would look something like this:

We could have saved a lot of driving time if we only went to the places where we actually ended up climbing:

Needless to say, we wasted a lot of time – and gas – zigzagging all over the place. I suppose I shouldn’t complain, though, considering the amount of rain Austin got recently.

One place we tried to climb had this massive tree fall on the narrow road. After several hours pulling and cutting the mass apart (with pocket knives), we couldn’t penetrate the last two 5” diameter branches (even after tying them to Ludwig).

In the end, we admitted defeat and went to our first indoor climbing gym. However, this wasn’t such a bad thing, as the gym was massive; it was at least three times the size of any other gym we have climbed at, with some of the tallest walls I have ever seen – including some on the outside of the building. In additional, they had free weights, showers, wifi, and free yoga. We ended up staying for the entire day.

I’ll just leave you with this random gem:

John: “Today you have worn one of my favorite and one of my least favorite shirts. That blue one just doesn’t fit you right.”

Me: “They are the exact same shirt, in different colors.”
